I have always seen symbolism in everything, so it comes as little surprise that I found my way to tarot and oracle decks. I’ve found card-reading to be quite useful because it helps me think of a situation in new ways. I think of it as a conversation, not necessarily for advice, but for perspective.
I used to think being a “real” reader meant all sorts of things: having all the cards memorized, knowing the elements associated with each suit, never having to reference a guidebook, reading on a particular schedule according to a specific ritual. In the last decade or so, I’ve been trying to remind myself that checking every box isn’t what determines my credibility.
Outward evidence won’t soothe
an anxious conscience.
Consciously being present to my actions and intentions is more important to me than the doing. Moreover, awareness of how the doing affects me is equally important. Sometimes it takes weeks for me to do a reading–not because I don’t want to, but because I have to acknowledge the rest my body and mind require. Throwing myself into any endeavor at the expense of my well-being will only undermine whatever I’m trying to achieve and my capacity for further creativity.
The readings on my page are by no means prescriptive. I am not here to convince anyone of anything. I am simply sharing what I learn from a personal practice that helps me think more conscientiously. And I have learned, by the way, to listen when I am moved to share, to speak. I have to trust where I’m led, and accept that the rest isn’t up to me.
