when it’s time to go, you’d better
remember that growth requires surrender
and before you do that you’ve got to quit
letting your breath fog up the mirror; step
back and see yourself truly:

you have done more than you hoped and wronged
less than you assume. you are not all disaster;
there is more to your days than gloomy monotony.
determine, therefore, which fundamental values
will guide you through your allotted days. what is
here now will pass away and yet something else
will still remain. so take note of all these stages

you’ve graced so far: from the dancing chorus
of joyous youth to the knelt confessions before a silent
audience. you cannot audition for an addition
to what you’ve been given but you can choose
the hard work right in front of you. step forward
from your own reflection and begin your path anew.
